What Is a GSOC?

A plain explanation of a Global Security Operations Center, what it does and where its limits are.

A Global Security Operations Center (GSOC) is a centralized function that monitors security-related events across many sites and systems and coordinates the response. In this context security means physical and operational security: cameras, alarms, access systems and the people and procedures around them.

What a GSOC typically does

  • Receives alerts and alarms from connected systems
  • Verifies events, for example by reviewing video where it is available
  • Assesses severity against defined criteria
  • Coordinates response and escalates to the right contacts
  • Documents what happened, when and with what outcome
  • Reports on activity so procedures can be reviewed

Why organizations use one

Teams with several sites often face high alert volumes, after-hours coverage gaps and inconsistent handling. Centralizing monitoring and applying one set of procedures makes handling more consistent and easier to review.

Limits worth knowing

A GSOC works with the systems and procedures it is given. It can only verify what the connected equipment shows, and it does not replace on-site response where physical presence is needed. Results depend on system compatibility, connectivity and the escalation protocol agreed in advance.
